We now approach, by the mercy of God, thestudy of the Book of Exodus, of which thegreat prominent theme is redemption. The first fiveverses recall to the mind the closing scenes of thepreceding book. The favored objects of God'selecting love are brought before us; and we findourselves very speedily conducted, by the inspiredpenman, into the action of the book.
The study of this section of our book is eminentlycalculated to impress the heart with a sense ofGod's unsearchable wisdom and infinite goodness. It enables one to form some idea of the character[273]of a kingdom governed by laws of divine appointment. Here, too, we may see the amazing condescensionof Him who, though He is the great Godof heaven and earth, can, nevertheless, stoop toadjudicate between man and man in reference tothe death of an ox, the loan of a garment, or theloss of a servant's tooth. "Who is like unto theLord our God, who humbleth Himself to behold thethings that are in heaven and on earth?" He governsthe universe, and yet He can occupy Himselfwith the provision of a covering for one of Hiscreatures. He guides the angel's flight and takesnotice of a crawling worm. He humbles Himself toregulate the movements of those countless orbs thatroll through infinite space, and to record the fall ofa sparrow.
Were I to enter into a full exposition of the remainingstatutes and judgments of this portion ofthe book of Exodus, it would carry me much furtherthan I feel, at present, led to go.[11] I will merelyobserve, in conclusion, that it is impossible to readthe section and not have the heart drawn out inadoration of the profound wisdom, well-balancedjustice, and yet tender considerateness which breathethroughout the whole. We rise up from the study ofit with this conviction deeply wrought into the soul, that the One who speaks here is "the only true,""the only wise," and the infinitely gracious God.
Beloved reader, we have now traveled togetherthrough this most precious book. We have, Ifondly hope, reaped some profit from our study. Itrust we have gathered up some refreshing thoughtsof Jesus and His sacrifice as we passed along. Feeble, indeed, must be our most vigorous thoughts, and shallow our deepest apprehensions, as to themind of God in all that this book contains. It ishappy to remember that, through grace, we are onour way to that glory where we shall know even as weare known, and where we shall bask in the sunshineof His countenance who is the beginning and endingof the ways of God, whether in creation, in providence,or redemption. To Him I do most affectionatelycommend you, in body, soul, and spirit. Mayyou know the deep blessedness of having your portionin Christ, and be kept in patient waiting forHis glorious advent. Amen. 2b1af7f3a8
